Simple Extractions

The most common type of tooth extraction is known as a simple extraction, and it is one of the easiest procedures for a dentist to perform. A simple extraction will require that your dentist first loosen the tooth and then, using forceps, the tooth will be manipulated carefully until it can be pulled from the tooth socket.

Because of the natural growth of a tooth, it fits tightly in its socket and your teeth are held in place by a periodontal ligament. The dentist will have to separate this ligament in order to extract the tooth.

While this procedure may sound daunting, it is not very complicated and can be completed without any pain to the patient. The area around the tooth can be numbed by the dentist so the patient cannot feel any pain and the procedure of a simple extraction, or tooth pulling, merely takes a few minutes.

Once the tooth is removed, there will be some bleeding. This will be addressed by your dentist with a piece of gauze. After the tooth has been successfully removed, the patient can usually go home and should experience little pain, if any, after the procedure.

Complex Extractions

Simple teeth pulling can usually be accomplished, but sometimes a tooth needs to be removed in a different manner. Procedures that are more complicated are sometimes employed when teeth are suffering from severe decay or if they are severely impacted into the jawbone. These methods are surgical in nature and may involve repairing areas with stitches after the extractions. These more complex extractions can be done with a local anesthesia, or in severe cases, sedatives may be used.

Both simple and complex tooth extractions are commonplace now and Spring Cypress Dental engages in these procedures on a daily basis. They can be completed quickly and with little discomfort to the patient.

The healing process after a tooth extraction will depend heavily on the type of extraction. Complex extractions take longer to heal because of the additional healing required to the gum areas that may have to be affected by the procedure. It is important to follow your dentist’s instructions after a tooth extraction to avoid complications that can arise afterwards.

Dry Sockets

A common complication after a tooth extraction involves a condition known as a dry socket. These can be extremely painful. While they are more common in lower teeth than in upper teeth, a dry socket can occur whenever an extraction has been done.

A dry socket is caused when the clot that forms inside the tooth socket separates from the walls of the socket. This creates exposed areas of bone in the jaw, which are very sensitive and painful.

The best way to avoid a dry socket after a simple or complex extraction is to follow the directions provided to you by your dentist relating to the care of your wound after an extraction. In most cases these instructions will address the type of food and beverages you eat, and the proper way to clean your mouth during the healing process. You will also be warned against vigorous physical activity that could dislodge the clot in your tooth socket.
