Given the diversity of people in general, it is well accepted that you are as likely to have straight and perfectly aligned teeth, as you are likely to have crooked teeth. If you are of the 50 percent of those without perfect teeth, there is no need to worry. Treatment of this dental condition has been completed successfully for many years, and today there are many different approaches to the application of braces to misaligned teeth. The traditional method of braces included small metal plates and small wires that would be tightened to push or pull teeth as necessary but today there are many different choices.

Modern methods of tooth alignment are straightforward and pain free. Nearly anyone under the age of 40 years old is a good candidate for tooth alignment, but it is well understood that the earlier one receives this type of treatment, the easier the process will be

Braces come in many styles to include ceramic, Invisalign, lingual braces and traditional metal braces.

Ceramic braces have the benefit of blending in with the patient’s teeth. They are also known to be very durable and very stain resistant. For these reasons the cosmetic appeal of ceramic braces is an important factor for many patients. Many people who rely on their good looks for the career such as actors commonly choose ceramic braces because of their cosmetic appeal as well. They also tend to be more comfortable than metal braces. With this cosmetic appeal and added comfort, you can expect to pay more for ceramic braces.

Invisalign braces rely on plastic trays at our custom formed to your mouth and changed as needed to coax your teeth into the position desired by your dentist. This is a relatively new technology and is best suited for those with mild alignment issues in their mouth. The plastic trays are made of a strong, durable polymer that is formed with a custom fit by your dentist. After a prescribed period, the trays will be changed with new ones that have a slightly different shape. The benefit of using Invisalign braces is that they are transparent so nobody would know that you are wearing braces.

Metal braces continue to be the most affordable way to straighten teeth, and they are very reliable and strong. The typical bonded metal plate style has been in use since the 1970’s and remains a tried and true approach to solving the problem of misaligned teeth. There some drawbacks to traditional metal braces however. The first is discomfort. While there is generally no pain associated with metal braces, they can cause some discomfort to the gums or soft tissues of the mouth until you get used to having the braces in your mouth. This acclimation usually takes just a couple of weeks for most people. Another drawback is the appearance of metal braces. They are very noticeable, so this may be an issue for people who have concerns about their appearance.

  1. Thanks for busting the myth that metal and ceramic braces can be completely replaced by invisalign. I thought had so that invisalign wont be as useful as the ceramic or the metal ones and must be used in cases of minor alignment cases only. Had read many blogs just for information but no none of them had mentioned about this, apart from your blog and Dentzz's blog. Thank you for sharing.

  2. The other day I was looking in the mirror, and I noticed that my teeth aren't nearly as straight as they used to be. I was kind of thinking that braces would be a great solution, I don't think I would have to have them on for too long, considering my teeth aren't terrible. I had no idea that there are so many different kinds of braces! For me, I think that Invisalign would be a great way to go! They aren't noticeable, and they would get the job done.
